  • Windows 8
  • Mac OS X 10.6 and up

Hardware Requirements for Windows

  • 1 GHz processor
  • 1 GB RAM minimum, 2-3 GB or more recommended
  • 16 GB of total hard disk space
  • 300 MB of available disk space

Hardware Requirements for Mac OS X

  • 2.1+ GHz Intel™ processor. Power PC is not supported
  • 1 GB RAM minimum, 2-3 GB or more recommended
  • 300 MB of available disk space

Supported Sketchup Versions

  • Google Sketchup 8 (please contact us for more info on compatibility with Sketchup 8)
  • Trimble Sketchup 2013
  • Trimble Sketchup 2014
  • Trimble Sketchup 2015

Virtualization systems such as VMWare and Parallels are not recommended.

The use of imaged machines is not recommended due to the fact that the licensing is hardware dependent.

V-Ray Licensing

There are 3 important aspects to the V-Ray licensing system

  • The USB License Key (commonly known as the USB license dongle or USB hardware key)
  • The Network License (also known as the floating license)
  • Distributed Render License

USB License Key

Chaos Group products are licensed per machine (to be precise it is per active user interface) and with one V-Ray license you can start and use V-Ray GUI (GUI means graphical user interface) and tools inside the platform, start one local render job and speed up rendering using distributed rendering.

To provide optimum security, reliability, and portability Chaos Group requires a USB dongle to license it's software. This dongle safely protects the V-Ray License from computer malfunctions, routine hardware maintenance and equipment changes. It provides users the ability to use V-Ray on multiple machines.

It is important to note, even though it is a per machine license, the dongle is not a node-locked device (that means it's not locked to one computer and that one computer only).  The dongle can be moved to another computer and the license becomes active in that new computer as long the dongle remains plugged in.  Moving away from node license, V-Ray can also be deployed as a network license.

Network License

All V-Ray products can be deployed as a network / floating license without additional charges.  A server or desktop computer can be allocated to act as the V-Ray license server (with USB dongle plugged in) and other computers with V-Ray installed can be set to retrieve the license from this server and automatically return it when the application is closed.

In this scenario, the number of concurrent users (users running the software at the same time) in the network is limited to number of licenses purchased and stored in a USB dongle (or multiple dongles).  One license server machine can have more than one USB dongle plugged in to it.

Distributed Render License

The Distributed Render License enables the render task to be split up and processed on multiple computers in a network instead of just the end-users computer.

The number of allowed distributed render nodes (node refers to computers and not the number of cores in a CPU) is defined at the time purchase and stored in a dongle (normally the same dongle as product license).

The render nodes run a small application that identifies itself as a render node and waiting for a render instruction. The render nodes themselves do not hold any licenses.

The number of render nodes available by default varies in between the different V-Ray products. Please contact us for more information about this.

Multiple V-Ray Products

Multiple products from V-Ray, for example V-Ray 2.0 for Rhino and V-Ray 2.0 for Sketchup and V-Ray 3.0 for 3ds Max, can have the licenses stored in a common USB dongle.

Licenses can be added on to dongles that already have other licenses by means of a dongle programming file.

Please contact us if you need more clarity on this.

USB License Key Safekeep

The clients are responsible for the safekeeping of the USB license dongle to prevent loss. Treat it as you would any other property of value in your office.
